                            2011 Shop with a Cop

It was another successful year for the City of Fort Mitchell Shop with a Cop program.  This year through generous donations of residents and local businesses, we were able to take three children representing two different families shopping.  Each child was given $250.00 to spend on gifts for themselves and family.  A $50.00 gift card to the Fort Mitchell Kroger was given to each family for assistance in purchasing items for the holiday dinner.

After shopping, all the children returned to the city building and enjoyed pizza, soda, chips and candy while they watched a holiday classic, Home Alone.  Friends and family of the police department volunteered and were on hand to wrap all the gifts.  Each child was given a treat bag made by one of the volunteers before they were picked up by parents.

A special thanks to Fort Mitchell Kroger's for donating items for the after party.  Wal-Mart gave a 10% discount off the total purchases and Snappy's Pizza donated all the pizza for the wrapping party.

Thanks to the generous donations whom keep this program going and touch the life's of each family.

RECYCLING DAYS CHANGE AUGUST 1, 2011

SCHEDULE CHANGE There will be a change to our recycling pickup schedule starting August 1, 2011.  Recycling will now be picked up on the second trash day of the week.  This will be a positive change so that in all neighborhoods there will only be containers curbside on two days a week rather than three.  For those with trash collection on Monday and Thursday, recycling will be picked up on Thursday.  For those with trash collection on Monday and Friday, recycling will be picked up on Friday. This change starts on August 1.

WHAT ELSE IS CHANGING?  As you may have heard, Bavarian will be offering wheeled carts with lids for both trash and recycling.  This will be an option for residents to choose if you would like – you will be allowed to continue using your current containers if you wish.  There will be no additional charge for the containers.  In fact, because the bids were very competitive, the cost to residents is actually going down slightly from about $189 per year to approximately $175 per year.  A letter will be sent to each residence by mail in late July including a form for you to use if you would like to have the new containers or you will be able to respond through Bavarian's website (click here for the link). It is expected to take several weeks for the new containers to be ordered and delivered, please be patient and continue to use your current cans and bins until any new ones you order are delivered.

WHY THE CHANGES?  At a meeting on June 20, 2011, City Council voted on a new trash collection contract.  Bavarian will continue to be our carrier.  Trash will still be collected twice a week and recycling will continue to be collected once a week, but recycling will now be picked up on the second trash day of the week.  The decisions were based on the preferences expressed in our recent survey and on choosing the best bid options to provide great service at a reasonable cost. Thanks to all who participated in the recent survey – the majority of responders wanted to keep twice a week trash and once per week recycling and many asked for larger/covered recycling containers

Following up on some of the survey responses, click here to see the list of what is currently recyclable.

Home Depot will collect CFLs for recycling

Home Depot announced last week that it will collect compact fluorescent light bulbs and send them off to be recycled. The home-improvement behemoth hopes the new program will keep the bulbs, which contain a small amount of mercury, out of household trash and recycling bins. IKEA also collects CFLs for recycling but doesn't have the market saturation of Home Depot; more than three-quarters of U.S. households are estimated to be within 10 miles of a Home Depot store. The company's 1,973 U.S. stores will also switch to CFLs in light-fixture showrooms by the fall, a move expected to save it $16 million annually in energy costs.

                           Severe Weather Sirens

Storm sirens are tested in Kenton County on the first Wednesday of the month at noon.

When you hear a weather siren you should be alerted to tune to local television or radio for a report on what severe weather watches or warnings have been issued for your area.  The main purpose of the sirens is to alert people who are outdoors.  When you are in your home you may not always hear the sirens.  This is especially true when winds pick up, when rain is falling and with the better insulation, tighter fitting windows, and the popularity and frequent use of central air conditioning today.  For optimum security, instead of relying on storm sirens that you might not hear it's a good idea to purchase a weather radio with battery backup that can be programmed to alert you when severe weather watches and warnings are issued in your county.  It's also a good idea to keep a flashlight, spare batteries and a battery powered radio all in one place that can be accessed easily when storms develop.

Kenton County has 33 sirens.  In Fort Mitchell, one siren is located in the parking lot of the City Building, at the corner of Dixie Highway and Highland Avenue and another is located on Grandview Drive.  Depending on where you live, you might hear sirens that are located in another city within the county.  The sirens will sound (a) for a tornado warning and the sirens also sound (b) when a severe thunderstorm warning is issued during a tornado watch and (c) when tested on the first Wednesday of the month at noon.

If a watch or a warning is issued in your area you need to know what the different levels are.  A Severe Thunderstorm Watch in your county means conditions are right for severe weather to develop so you should monitor weather conditions closely.  A Severe Thunderstorm Warning in your county means severe weather is in the area, you should seek shelter and tune to local television or radio.

A Tornado Watch in your county means conditions are right for a tornado to develop in the area.  You should monitor weather conditions very closely.  A Tornado Warning in your county means one or more tornados have been sighted in your area and you should seek shelter.

You don't have to be afraid when you hear the sirens if you know how to react.  Being prepared can help keep you calm and safe in the event of an emergency.  Understanding these points and keeping an emergency kit at the ready should give you peace of mind.  For more information visit Kenton County's site for details on siren testing, siren locations and emergency planning.

Holiday Trash Pick-Up
When your trash collection day falls
on Christmas Day or New Year's Day, your trash will not be picked up on the holiday and will not be picked up until your next regular trash collection day. On any other holidays, both trash and recycling are picked up on the holiday if that is your regular collection day.  Remember for streets to the West side of Dixie Highway, curbside recycling collection continues every Wednesday.  For streets East of Dixie and South of Buttermilk (in the former Crescent Park area) the schedule has changed, recycling will be every Tuesday.
