Effective January 1, 2004 the Fort Mitchell Fire Department and the Fort Mitchell Life Squad merged creating one department, allowing for more efficient operations. There are 72 active members of the Fort Mitchell Fire / EMS. The paid staff has increased to five full time firefighters. This is in addition to fifteen part time firefighters. The paid personnel are on duty 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, volunteers are on duty around the clock 7-days a week. There are 49 members of the Fort Mitchell Fire / EMS who respond to life squad calls in the cities of Fort Mitchell, Lakeside Park and Crestview Hills. Of these members making life squad runs, 43 are Emergency Medical Technicians certified in the use of a semi-automatic defibrillator. Three of the remaining members are paramedics and two are registered nurses.
With the recent additions to the full time staff, Public Education has been an area in which we have been able to focus more attention. To go with that attention we secured a FEMA grant for public education. These monies were used to purchase the National Fire Protection Association's "Risk Watch" program for pre-school and grade school students. This program is now implemented in the grade schools and most of the pre-schools within our territory. (For more information about the program check out http://www.riskwatch.org/.)
As a service to our residents, infant car seat installation is available by appointment. We also offer home fire safety inspections and can assist you with your home evacuation plan. The City of Fort Mitchell has an ordinance requiring smoke detectors in all occupied dwelling units, whether privately owned or rented. Information concerning type and number of smoke detectors required may be obtained by contacting us. To schedule an appointment or for more information about these services call 331-1267 or send us an e-mail.
The Fort Mitchell Department also boasts one of the finest Fire Prevention Bureaus in this area. Department members are always available to provide fire prevention information to residents. They also offer "Tot Finder" and "Invalid" decals to be affixed to the windows in your home if you have a small child or invalid living with you. These decals are valuable to the firefighters should a rescue be necessary and can be obtained from either the City Clerk or a member of the Fire Prevention Bureau.
Fort Mitchell Fire / EMS has a proud history.
The Fort Mitchell Fire Department was established in 1928 and celebrated it's 75th anniversary in 2003. Over the years it has become one of the finest equipped and most well-trained departments in the state. This is evidenced by the fact that Fort Mitchell, along with the territory it protects, enjoys a Class 3 Fire Protection Classification. This is an extremely good rating for a volunteer fire department and means a savings on the fire insurance premiums paid by citizens. The department is proud of its facilities in the City Building and welcomes you to call and arrange for a tour at your convenience.
The Fort Michell Life Squad was founded in 1980 and merged with the Fire Department in 2004. The number of EMS runs continues to increase slightly each year. In 2003 there were 1,036 EMS runs and in 2004 the total was 1,052. The service runs with two ambulances, one as a primary unit and the other as a backup. Both of the basic life support ambulances are equally equipped to handle almost any medical emergency. It is comforting to know that in the event of an emergency, with a call to 911, these well trained individuals are on the way to help within minutes.
The semi-automatic defibrillator is one of the most advanced pieces of equipment carried on the ambulances. In the event of cardiac arrest, the certified Emergency Medial Technicial can assist the patient by connecting the defibrillator to the patient to determine the patient's heart rhythm and see is a shock from the defibrillator is needed. This is used in addition to cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in an effort to restart the patient's heart.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, our organization is always in need of new members. We provide all the equipment and the training - all we need is for you to fill out an application and have a desire to help your neighbors! If you have any questions or are interested in receiving more information or filling out an application, please stop by the firehouse, call 331-1267 or send an e-mail. The application is available on our forms page or simply click here to download the PDF.
